Art - The Ski Jumper

Artist: Kirsti Aall (1991).

This sculpture, which is of a ski jumper on a slender base on Corten steel, was made in 1981. It originally stood behind Trondheim District Court, but was moved to Granåsen (a ski facility) in 1991. Here it fit in naturally with the major ski events arranged at Granåsen: the national skiing championships in 1992 and the Nordic World Ski Championship in 1997.

Toralf Engan, a Norwegian Olympic and World Championship Ski Jump winner, is said to have been the model for the sculpture. Aall works in plaster, concrete and marble. Her form of expression is naturalistic, and she has shown a particular interest in figures in free fall, of which which this sculpture is a good example.
